El mi\u00e9rcoles pasado, los equipos sinodales de las Conferencias Episcopales de EE.UU. y Canad\u00e1 publicaron su <\/span>Documento Final Norteamericano para la Etapa Continental<\/a>. El documento de 22 p\u00e1ginas (excluyendo los Ap\u00e9ndices) recoge el proceso y los frutos de un discernimiento comunitario sin precedentes hist\u00f3ricos de 931 delegados de nuestros dos pa\u00edses en 12 asambleas sinodales virtuales convocadas en tres idiomas entre diciembre y enero. Aunque la nuestra fue la \u00fanica de las siete asambleas continentales que se reuni\u00f3 virtualmente, los delegados norteamericanos abordaron \"<\/span>Ensancha el espacio en tu tienda<\/a>\", la s\u00edntesis global de la primera fase del s\u00ednodo, con las mismas preguntas que los delegados de todo el mundo: \u00bfqu\u00e9 resuena, qu\u00e9 preguntas surgen, cu\u00e1les deber\u00edan ser nuestras prioridades?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

El equipo sinodal norteamericano, compuesto por 18 personas, entre obispos, sacerdotes y laicos de ambas Conferencias, identific\u00f3 tres temas que surgieron en las conversaciones sinodales: Dotados y Llamados mediante el Bautismo; Comuni\u00f3n con Cristo y entre nosotros; y Enviados en Misi\u00f3n. Estos temas sirven de base para cinco recomendaciones concretas, que servir\u00e1n de base para la elaboraci\u00f3n del documento de trabajo del Vaticano, <\/span>Laboris Instrumentum<\/span><\/i>, para la primera de las dos reuniones mundiales de obispos que se celebrar\u00e1n en Roma el pr\u00f3ximo mes de octubre:<\/span><\/p>

  1. Integraci\u00f3n de la consulta sinodal en las Iglesias locales a trav\u00e9s de la formaci\u00f3n en la sinodalidad y la espiritualidad del discernimiento;<\/span><\/li>
  2. Dar la bienvenida a quienes se sienten excluidos de la participaci\u00f3n en la vida de la Iglesia de manera aut\u00e9ntica y fiel al Evangelio y a la fe cat\u00f3lica;<\/span><\/li>

    Tal como sucedi\u00f3 con los documentos oficiales anteriores relacionados con el s\u00ednodo -el <\/span>Informe Nacional de los Obispos de EE.UU.<\/span><\/a> y \"Ensancha el espacio de tu tienda\" del Vaticano- \u00a1aqu\u00ed hay buenas nuevas! Varios delegados a las Asambleas Continentales de Am\u00e9rica del Norte, as\u00ed como un participante en la sesi\u00f3n de discernimiento de la Regi\u00f3n XVI organizada por el Equipo del S\u00ednodo de la USCCB, que son activos con Discerning Deacons, nos ayudan a reconocer esa buena nueva.<\/span><\/p>

    En primer lugar, a pesar de las limitaciones de un proceso virtual, el Equipo del S\u00ednodo de Am\u00e9rica del Norte se comprometi\u00f3 con un proceso sinodal que privilegiaba la escucha y el discernimiento comunitario.     Perhaps most importantly, the bishops themselves embraced a vulnerable posture in their public reflection of their experiences of synodality, whether as leaders of initiatives in their respective conferences or as participants in the process at diocesan and continental levels. In their introductory letter, as well as a 16-paragraph section of personal reflections, they acknowledged that they \u201ccan and must do better in consulting those who are poor, migrant communities, Indigenous peoples, and racial minorities in our communities, and the many others who are wounded in the Church and in society\u201d<\/strong> (#50). They admitted to being as uncertain as many lay people about where this synodal process may be taking us, needing as much formation as any other Catholics in the spirituality and skills of synodality, and resolving to trust in the Holy Spirit. \u201cSynodality is an adventure and we aren\u2019t very familiar with it,\u201d they said, acknowledging that synodality is something \u201cbigger\u201d than the \u201cparish pastoral councils, presbyteral councils, and diocesan pastoral councils\u201d with which they are more familiar. \u201cWe need to do more with our people \u2013 listen to them more to aid our discernment; sit down with them and discuss the religious life in the diocese. We cannot just sit in the office and make important decisions by ourselves\u201d<\/strong> (#48).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    Bernadette Rudolf<\/strong>, Program Director at <\/span>Centro Espiritual Cranaleith<\/a> (ingl\u00e9s) y delegada de la <\/span>Asociaci\u00f3n Nacional para el Ministerio Laico<\/a> (ingl\u00e9s) en la sesi\u00f3n de discernimiento de los obispos estadounidenses con los delegados de la Regi\u00f3n XVI, qued\u00f3 impresionada por la postura humilde de los obispos. \"Me conmueve el modo en que la sinodalidad libera a la gente para hablar con honestidad: sobre sus esperanzas, sobre las cuestiones dif\u00edciles que deben abordarse y sobre lo que les resulta dif\u00edcil en el proceso.     Second, this official synod document largely affirms what we heard from brothers and sisters around the world back in the fall with the release of the global synthesis report. The People of God desire more synod and need more opportunities to become synodal by engaging each other synodally. The wounds of violated trust and exclusion at the hands of the Church itself are deep and can be healed through intentional encounters of loving affirmation and inclusion in the tent of God\u2019s holy people. Our baptism gives us equal stake in the responsibility for the Church\u2019s mission in a world that needs it more than ever. Our young people are \u201cthe now\u201d of the Church<\/strong> and want to be in the mix, including at global gatherings of bishops in Rome (#20). And while it is women who keep the church \u201calive and healthy,\u201d we remain a marginalized group within it,<\/strong> a reality that can be remedied by acknowledging the \u201cbaptismal dignity\u201d of women and continuing \u201cthe examination of a variety of aspects of Church life, including decision making roles, leadership, and ordination\u201d (#19).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    \"<\/span>The document echoes what I heard in the session for Region XVI,\u201d said Rudolf, \u201cas well as what I heard at various sessions responding to the DCS. Despite the narrowness of participation in this part of the synodal journey, people of good will have named some key issues for the North American Church. The document seems accurate. This process of synodality has begun and the cat is out of the bag.\u00a0 As one participant is quoted as saying, \u2018There is no going back\u2019<\/strong> (#57). It is essential to the future of the Church that this conversion continue with the same honesty and humility<\/strong>.\"<\/span><\/p>

    \u201cLet\u2019s enrich the life of the Church by taking seriously the baptismal call of women from the moment the living waters flow over them,\u201d<\/strong> , dijo Bridget Deegan Krause<\/strong> MDiv, an NACC board certified chaplain and delegate from the Archdiocese of Detroit. \u201cEvery child, including girls, should grow up hearing and see themselves in the Church\u2019s discernment of full gifts for all levels of ministry, including ordered ministry and governance.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

    Michelle Catania<\/strong>, a delegate from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, echoed Deegan Krause\u2019s appreciation. \"<\/strong><\/span>There seemed to be a recognized disconnect between the \u2018smaller\u2019 Church efforts in our Catholic communities (and ourselves) and the \u2018bigger\u2019 institution,\u201d<\/strong> she said. \u201dThere were no answers about how to combine this divergence, but there <\/span>s\u00ed<\/span><\/i> se hizo hincapi\u00e9 en que 'nombrarla' continuamente es tambi\u00e9n un paso vital en nuestro camino sinodal\".<\/span><\/p>

    \u201cThe need for formation is stated over and over again in the document,\u201d<\/strong> commented Rudolf. \u201cThe fulfillment of this need is crucial. We have entered a strange new world and everyone needs to learn the lay of the land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

    \u201cThe document lands in a lovely place,\u201d concluded Deegan Krause, who acknowledged again that the bishops\u2019 own reflections convey a pastoral tone and recognition of the fact trust has been broken and bridges need to be built. \u201cAlways we need to account for the clericalism, elitism, sexism, racism and ableism that poison our ability to be peers with one another, laity and clergy. Structured conversations with rules and expectations, governed by the Spirit through prayer is where this happens.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>
