{"id":3931,"date":"2021-08-04T00:03:54","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T00:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/?p=3931"},"modified":"2022-03-22T01:54:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T01:54:33","slug":"standing-with-our-courageous-mothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/es\/standing-with-our-courageous-mothers\/","title":{"rendered":"Standing with our courageous mothers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cSend her away, for she keeps calling out after us.\u201d<\/em> -Matthew 15:23<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bible.usccb.org\/bible\/readings\/080421.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s Gospel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has some of my least favorite words in it. It\u2019s a portrait of Jesus that cuts against the ever-welcoming, ever-merciful, ever-loving image that we evangelize and encourage children to come to know in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, Jesus who meets a woman desperate in her need. And his first response is silence. His closest friends tell him to send her away. And when we expect Jesus to refute them, what instead comes from his mouth is: \u201cI was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Matthew\u2019s telling, this brave woman responds, \u201cLord, help me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her daughter is tormented. She would go to the ends of the earth to try and assuage her daughter\u2019s pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is our mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At our first \u201cGathering the Fruits\u201d session last week, 20 leaders from around the country came together to share the key themes and insights that emerged in 50+ house meetings in June and July on women and the diaconate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3935\" src=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-5.06.47-PM-300x191.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-5.06.47-PM-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-5.06.47-PM-600x381.png 600w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-5.06.47-PM-768x488.png 768w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-5.06.47-PM-16x10.png 16w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-5.06.47-PM.png 848w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One young adult participant shared the significance of intergenerational community in Discerning Deacons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUntil now, I didn\u2019t really know the women who had come before me. These women have been carrying this cause humbly and courageously for decades, to seek the full dignity of women within the structures and life of our Church.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would echo this. I am humbled to come to know our mothers. I think of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/es\/witness\/gladys-c-whitehouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gladys Whitehouse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncronline.org\/authors\/phyllis-zagano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phyllis Zagano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/es\/witness\/anne-hansen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anne Hansen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/es\/about\/#advisors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hna. Donna Ciangio, O.P.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and others. And Svea Fraser, who I finally met in-person this week, after over a year of Zoom meetings!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Svea is shepherding a growing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/es\/monthly-webinar-deacon-william-t-ditewig-on-dachau-diaconate-circles-and-vatican-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeacon Circle\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a group of women from Montana to Boston to Los Angeles to Virginia. Before, they were alone and isolated. But slowly &#8212; as this discernment in our Church has brought them together &#8212; they are becoming a circle, a community. Together they pray, share their stories, learn about the history of women deacons and about the ministry of deacons today. They inspire each other toward greater service, offer encouragement and commit to spreading the good news about this living discernment. One woman, inspired by all this talk about diaconal vocation, took the leap to go help meet the needs of migrants at the border. Collectively they have engaged hundreds of people in our summer of house meetings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Svea is no neophyte to lay participation. A founding member of Voice of the Faithful, her love of the Church radiates from her. As she showed me her library, the stacks of books that document the work she helped lead for our Church\u2019s healing from clergy abuse, she is more proud of the embroidery she received as a gift from a friend when she finished seminary (yes, seminary).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She shared stories about facing down her worst fears (ever been out to sea, at night, in a storm?) and the sense of Jesus\u2019 peace, protecting her heart and comforting her even in the most tumultuous of times. She\u2019s filled with the joy of the Gospel. At 75, she is full of life. I was deeply moved when she shared, \u201cThis is my life\u2019s work\u201d, referring to her leadership in Discerning Deacons. And then she gave me a blessing as we parted ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3936\" src=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-4.01.13-PM-300x227.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-4.01.13-PM-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-4.01.13-PM-600x455.png 600w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-4.01.13-PM-16x12.png 16w, https:\/\/discerningdeacons.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-08-03-at-4.01.13-PM.png 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Svea is the face of the mother in today\u2019s Gospel story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This particular Gospel story speaks to our work in Discerning Deacons. Even when I wish it wasn\u2019t the story that most clearly reveals what our work is. Because there is so much pain in this encounter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each week in this project, I meet more mothers, ready to endure. Also, painfully, I meet and remember daughters who are tormented. As they share what they have suffered, or how they are called by God, how many are silenced and not believed?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We come in need, keenly aware that too many of the daughters walking on the earth still do not know themselves as equally beloved by God as men are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many of today\u2019s disciples &#8212; so close to Jesus everyday &#8212; are still unable to see the witness of such mother-advocates. Wanting to shut down the dialogue. Close the door to the conversation. Lock it up and throw away the key. Afraid of any change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the living context both then and now, this is a truly revolutionary Gospel story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her bravery, wit and quick thinking, this woman turns Jesus\u2019 words of hurt back on him:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlease, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She does what I am not sure anyone else does in the Gospels: She leads <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a conversion, a change of heart. In this encounter, Jesus is moved by her. He is forced to see something he couldn\u2019t see before: that his mission and purpose is wider than he and his friends thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His healing is for all those with faith. The daughter is healed \u201cfrom that hour.\u201d And her mother is offered the fullness of recognition and praise for the faith that her bravery and wit and urgency bear witness to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some days, we might just feel that we are being sent away.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are invited to stand with this mother and with so many of our mothers who endure the ridicule, who endure silence in the face of our pleading, and who refuse to move because the faith that has brought us here now gives us the courage to remain steadfast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our daughters\u2019 healing and freedom is on the line.
