“A serious discernment about women and the diaconate is fully appropriate, fully orthodox and an important process for the Church to undertake. It is grounded in the Church’s practice for several centuries and would help bring renewal for the Church in the world today. I’m glad to endorse Discerning Deacons and encourage those seeking meaningful ways to pray and act together on this important question for our time.”

Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., is the founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation and the author of several books on the deep wisdom of Christian mysticism and the traditions of action and contemplation.

“I first arrived in Zambia almost 35 years ago. My deepest urge has always been the proclamation of the Gospel. Making Jesus known, loved, and meaningful to people’s lives is my absolute joy. For a long time, I considered myself an apostle and an evangelist. Truly, though, in these ministries, I feel as though I have served as a “deacon” without the formal title.”

“This work is essential for challenging the status quo, deeply exploring the Church’s history of the female diaconate, and courageously asking important questions. I also believe that the inclusion of women’s voices and experiences will increase emotional, mental, and physical safety for other women in church spaces.”

“I know that women are being called by the Holy Spirit and women are living diakonia in creative, ordinary ways today. Now, as a mother of a toddler girl, I want to discern with the Church on how to make way for her to discern her own future calling, should the Spirit call her.”
