Here in Indianapolis, IN, we with the Indianapolis Phoebe Circle uplifted the witness of St. Phoebe with a Mass and discussion groups following at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School. During the discussion groups, some participants commented that they didn’t feel very connected to the ongoing Synod until our celebration. The intergenerational community of participants created a beautiful and supportive environment. Two young women witnesses who shared their reflections were Marian University students, but the majority of other attendees were middle aged or older. There was incredibly meaningful support, sharing and connection that we created together in our shared space.

We had 30 people participate in our event. As our celebrant stated, “It would be nice if there were more people here, but the early Church wasn’t big either!” Our journey is just beginning. Before the event, many participants were unfamiliar with St. Phoebe, feeling disconnected from the Synod, and unaware of the conversation around women in the diaconate. People left energized, informed and with materials to continue the conversation with others. We hope that this event was simply the beginning of our journey together.

More than anything, it was a profound experience to share space with others who were glad to discuss the leadership and ministry of women in the Church with courage and honesty.

“A highlight for many present was the Scripture reflection offered by a female parishioner who specifically spoke about her experience as a minister in the Church. At St. William, communal leadership and ministry are a central part of our community’s identity and values.”

“I have always viewed my ministry through this lens – out of service for and to the people of God. My intention was and is never to center myself in my ministry as a lay leader, rather my focus was always on how I could better uplift others in our midst. The Holy Spirit has certainly been active in the communities where I have ministered.”

“The mission of Discerning Deacons is important because they are advocating for a larger role for women in the Church, which is hard to do. Discerning Deacons is unafraid to get their hands dirty to bring about a more inclusive Church for women.”
