Since 2020, Discerning Deacons has been animating individuals and communities around the world to celebrate St. Phoebe during the month of her commemoration, September.
Together we led our faith communities to…
- Lift up St. Phoebe on or near the day she is commemorated, September 3
- Pray for the universal church during the Global Synod and its implementation as we discern about women’s participation
- Celebrate the voices and gifts of women leaders in our communities
- Offer our communities an opportunity to grow in understanding of and exercise their baptismal call to diakonia—bridge-building, humble service in liturgy, Word, and social action, especially with those on the margins

St. Phoebe Day Witnesses
Read reports from some of the parishes, high schools, universities, and other Catholic organizations who celebrated the Feast of St. Phoebe in September 2023.

Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church
“A young woman from our parish, who dreams of a future for women in the Church, is an artist and also developed coloring book type pages about St. Phoebe for the children as part of our celebration. Together, we are grateful to uplift St. Phoebe in our parish, and we will continue to uplift the witness of women in our own community and in our Church!”

University of Dayton Campus Ministry
“It was especially meaningful to hear a woman break open the scripture for our community. This is just the beginning of raising awareness on our campus of the witness and ministry of St. Phoebe, and the witness of women in our community. Together, we are just beginning our journey of rethinking women’s participation in the Church.”

St. Bridget of Kildare Parish
“As a parish, we know the blessing of the many ministries and gifts that women in our parish share with all of us. Celebrating Mass this weekend to honor the witness of St. Phoebe focused attention on women’s gifts for leadership in our parish and the Church more broadly. We are proud to be a part of the conversation and discernment for women’s ordination to the diaconate.”

Church of the Good Shepherd/Immaculate Conception Parish
“We know that the synodal process is a gift for us to discern, pray and discuss the possibility of a diaconate that includes both men and women, and more active involvement for women in the Church. Our St. Phoebe celebration was just the beginning of what is to come.”
